Teqball World Championships 2022 Day 1 Summary
Day 1 of The Teqball World Championships 2022 commenced on Wednesday, with the world’s best Teqers competing in the group stages of the men’s and women’s singles, and women’s doubles events at the State-of-the-art KIA Metropol Arena, in Nuremberg, Germany. The KIA will be the home of the Championships for the next five days, culminating in the Finals on Sunday 27 November.
In the men’s singles, four athletes were seeded according to the World Ranking: Romania’s Apor Györgydeák who is currently ranked 1st in the world, Hungary’s Ádám Blázsovics 2nd, Poland’s Adrian Duszak, 4th and Serbia’s Bogdan Marojevic – 8th, meaning they will advance straight to the last 16.
Familiar faces Hugo Rabeux and Luka Pilic will be joining the seeded Teqers in the round of 32 after topping their groups, alongside other group winners which include representatives from Japan, Turkey, Kuwait and Thailand.
Due to no seeding in the women’s singles or women’s double’s competition, all female Teqball athletes had the opportunity to compete on Day 1.
In the singles, world number 1 Anna Izsak, world number 4 Carolyn Greco, and world number 6 Rafaella Fontes are among the competitors who qualified for the last 16 round, which promises to be fiercely contested.
In the doubles, 17 teams competed across 4 groups, with Greco and Osmundson, Fontes and Guitler, Janicsek and Vasas, and Dako and Barabasi all qualifying for the knockouts with unbeaten records.
During the day, the audience were treated to an amazing display from Team Thailand whose signature moves mirrored that of gymnasts with acrobatic flexible movements including wonderful overhead kicks and smashing play.
More than 181 athletes from 48 countries are representing at the 5th Teqball World Championships, with more than 20 referees from all over the world using video assistant referee (VAR) for the first time in a Teqball World Championships.
