Multiple upsets at the Belgian International Teqball Open
The Belgian International Teqball Open has become the very first Teqball event in category IV. since the new rules have been implemented. More than hundreds of teqers fought for FITEQ World Ranking points as the updated policy makes those credits more crucial.
Along with the two singles and three doubles categories, the organizers also created the possibility for U19 players to face each other in youth men’s single class where Saxe Paarup-Clausen won in the final against his compatriot, the Danish Magnus Aagaard Madsen while Peter Gergely finished as bronze medallist from Romania.
In women’s singles, the favourites advanced confidently to the KO stage, although Nóra Vicsek - who has great results mostly in doubles, such as the silver medal from the World Teqball Championships 2023 or the title from Madrid in 2023 – stunned Amelie Julian. The French came second at Teqball’s very first European championships in Kraków, at the European Games 2023, however after she finished second in her group, had to face Kinga Barabasi in the quarterfinals and lost. The European champion was unstoppable and triumphed in this category. In the final, Anna Izsak, the world champion of 2021 took the first set, but the Romanian teqer fought back well and won in three. Teqball’s very first European champion medallist, the Danish Nanna Lind Kristensen got the victory at the bronze game after winning against her compatriot, Mira Fænø Dahlmann.
Among men, after the quiet group stage, the first upset came in the quarterfinals when FITEQ World Ranking 28th Lionel Beyer beat the current title holder of the category, Adrian Duszak in two sets. The French was on fire and reached the final where Apor Gyorgydeak, world champion of 2022 assured his victory.
The Hungarians dominated women’s doubles as Petra Pechy/Nora Vicsek were in the gold match facing Krisztina Acs/Gabriella Kota. The world champion silver medallist secured their place on the top in three sets, while Nanna Lind Kristensen/Mira Fænø Dahlmann took the bronze medals against the Polish pair, Alicja Bartnicka/ Agnieszka Żmudzka.
World champion silver medallist from 2021, Julien Grondin returned to the TEQ table in men’s doubles after a devastating injury sidelined him and missed almost the whole season of 2023. With Barthlomiej Franczuk they reached the semifinals and only the world champions, Csaba Banyik/Balazs Katz stopped them. Finally, the French-Polish duo returned home with bronze medals. In the final, the newly formed double, Apor Gyorgydeak and four-time world champion Adam Blazsovics surprised the immaculate couple in three sets.
In mixed doubles, again the Hungarians were the dominant force as Acsa/Banyik won against Kota/Katz and Pechy/Blazsovics took the third place.
The next tour will be held in Kobylka, Poland as a category V. event on 13 April.
