Day 1 of Teqball World Series Madrid 2024 promises highly anticipated clashes
The world’s best players will gather in Madrid to kick off the Teqball World Series Madrid 2024, and the debuting day will immediately bring excitement to the Spanish capital.
In the women’s singles, we will have 29 competitors, drawn into eight groups. Group A includes 2021 world champion and WR number 2 Anna Izsak (HUN), and in Group B, we will find 2022 world champion and current WR number 3, Carolyn Greco (USA). Teqball’s first European champion Kinga Barabasi (ROU) headlines Group C, and silver medallist Amelie Julian (FRA) will be featured in Group D.
Jutatip Kuntatong, last year’s World Teqball Championship finalist from Thailand should also be considered as a contender. She is going to clash with another WR top20 player, Agnieszka Rybicka (POL) in Group E. Groups F, G and H look incredibly balanced with at least two top25 players in each of them, like Danish Nanna Lind Kristensen (who won the sport’s first-ever European Championships medal) and WR nr. 15 Zaneta Cygora (POL) in Group H. The top two players from their respective groups advance to the quarterfinals, which will also be played on Thursday, so by the end of the day, only 8 Teqball athletes' hopes will stay alive.
The men’s singles competition also starts on Thursday with no less than 32 participants. Reigning world champion Adrian Duszak (POL) will miss this event, but the winner of the 2022 edition and WR number 1 Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU) is going to be there to defend the title he won in Madrid in 2023. One of his main challengers could be 4-time world gold medallist Adam Blazsovics (HUN) from Group B, who will be tested right away in the group phase when he meets Frenchman Lionel Beyer. His countryman, world and European bronze medallist Hugo Rabeux is looking to sweep Group C, just like WR number 7 Martin Csereklye (HUN) in Group D.
Group E is a unique one though, as it features Jonathan Coquelle (BEL) and Yassine Sahli (TUN), with Arnold Szilágyi (ROU) looking to upset both of them. In Group F we can find one of Teqball’s up-and-coming young stars, Marek Pokwap (POL), while Group G could be a coin toss between Zaid Eidan (KUW) and Oleh Usychenko from Ukraine. Group H also seems impossible to predict with Nikola Mitro (SRB), Mame Cheikh Fam (SEN), Gergo Dombai (HUN) and Boonkoom Tipwong (THA). This field is as stacked as it gets.
Similarly to the women’s competition, only 8 players will remain standing at the end of Day 1. Do not forget to vote for the best female/male athletes of the Teqball World Series Madrid 2024 here.
