Malaga hosts the second Challenger Teqball League

Challenger Teqball League - Malaga Marca Cup starts this Friday with 63 athletes in three categories.

The Challenger Teqball League continues in Spain after its enormous success in Santarém. Challenger Teqball League - Malaga Marca Cup is the second event of FITEQ's brand-new tournament aimed at nurturing grassroots talent.

The International Federation of Teqball and its partners started to work on this project in 2023 to create a platform for grassroots development and to gain experience both by the players and the national federations. At each competition, the minimum price money is 3000€ and the participants will compete in at least three different categories during the famous Marca Sports Weekend 2024.

Five events will be held as part of the Challenger Teqball League. After the kick-off in Santarém, the championships's second rendez-vous will be held in Malaga between 11 & 13 of October, in the heart of Malaga. Right after this season's last Teqball World Series act in Budapest, 63 athletes - including multiple world and European champions - from 16 nations compete on the Iberian peninsula.

In women's doubles, 10 twosomes face each other. The highest-ranked Spaniards are the world champion 5th Silvia Ferrer Garcia and her partner Anna Gomez I Vila however, the tournament's heavy favourites are the world silver medallists from Hungary, Petra Pechy/Nora Vicsek. Kinga Barabasi (ROU) who won two trophies in Budapest for the first in her career as well as her first Best Female Athlete of the Event title joins with Amelie Julian (FRA). According to their FITEQ World Ranking placements, this pairing should be the final. Multiple Teqball World Series medallist, Krisztina Acs found a new partner after Kota's suspension and with her compatriot Timea Kapusi (HUN) they can surprise the opponents. The doubles are divided into two groups with five in each, the first two will advance to the semi-finals.

Anna Gomez I Vila (ESP) serves with the head at Teqball Tour Los Angeles in 2023.

The biggest field with 22 pairs is in mixed doubles. World champion bronze medallists Csaba Banyik/Krisztina Acs (HUN), European champion runner-ups Amelie Julian/Hugo Rabeux (FRA), winner of Teqball World Series Budapest, Apor Gyorgydeak/Kinga Barabasi (ROU) and multiple Teqball World Series medallists Petra Pechy/Adam Blazsovics are both top-seeded which means they will start their campaign in the knockout stage. The rest of the field will compete in six groups and the first two finishers join the top-seeded pairs. As Kota will not play, Balazs Katz (HUN) had to find a new partner, and in Kapusi, the category's European champion found one. Three-time world champion in MD, Nikola Mitro teamed up with Zsofia Dezsenyi (HUN), while the immaculate duo in Santarém, Vicsek and Marek Pokwap (POL) are another team to beat. World silver medallist in singles, Julien Grondin joined one of the local favourites, Gomez I Villa, while Ferrer Garcia's partner is going to be Pasquale Errico (ITA). Tania Rodriguez Canal/Adrian Delgado and Teresa Garcia de La Rosa/Daniel Rodriguez Garcia are from the host nation.

World champions Banyik/Katz and Gyorgydeak/Blazsovics are top-seeded, but many exciting games are expected in the group stage of men's doubles at Challenger Teqball League - Malaga Marca Cup. The 18 doubles are also in six groups, and the knockout stage is the same as in mixed doubles. The category's winner in Santarém, Pokwap teamed up with multiple world medallists Szabolcs Ilyes (ROU) while Mitro along with Martim Vasques (POR) will try to get the trophy. Do not underestimate Bartlomiej Franczuk (POL)/Julien Grondin (FRA) and the Rabeux will be fighting together with the 14-years-old Danish prodigy Frederik Guldborg-Mondrup who is also the youngest one at the event. Spain will be represented by a debuting pair:  Manuel Sanchez Poncela/Adrian Delgado.

Guldborg-Mondrup is one of the new young talents from the next generation.

"The Challenger Teqball League debuted in Santarém perfectly. The players loved the tour and many new athletes joined the Teqball family. It is a strategic initiative by FITEQ to provide Tier IV and V tournaments, specifically designed for grassroots players and national federations to gain experience in hosting events," said Bela Muller, Head of Communications at FITEQ. "In Malaga, we are very delighted to have the first name sponsor as one of the most-known newspapers in the world, Marca joined us to help us grow during the Marca Sports Weekend 2024."

The first day of the Challenger Teqball League - Malaga Marca Cup starts with the qualifiers of WD and MD and by the end of the day, we will have the semi-finalists. Saturday will be all about mixed doubles while on Sunday the semi-finals start at 10 AM, and the finals at 12PM. All the finals can be watched on TeqTV.
