CTL - Badalona Cup: CTL's final event as the last challenge before the World Teqball Championships 2024

The fifth and the last event of Challenger Teqball League in Badalona attracted 19 nations from all over the world.

The record is already broken as many nations have never been represented in Challenger Teqball League events. Altogether 58 players from 19 countries will finalise their form in Badalona, Spain two weeks before the World Teqball Championships 2024.

The International Federation of Teqball and its partners created a new tournament as a platform for grassroots development and to gain experience both by the players and the national federations during the five events of the Challenger Teqball League. At each competition, the minimum price money is 3000€ and the participants will compete in three categories. In Badalona, women's doubles men's doubles and mixed doubles will be held between November 22 to 24 as CTL's final show.

58 players (second highest) from 19 countries (highest-ever) will play in Badalona as the second CTL event hosted in Spain -together with the Teqball World Series in Madrid in May is the third. The league kicked off in Santarém, Portugal, then Malaga was the next. The third rendez-vous was in Szombathely, Hungary, while the penultimate was hosted by Odorheiu Secuiesc, Romania.

In women's doubles, the hometown hero, Silvia Ferrer Garcia also known as 'Chivi' teamed up once again with the Hungarian Timea Kapusi. The highest-ranked pair is the world bronze medallist Petra Pechy/Nora Vicsek (HUN). For Pechy, the tour in Badalona is crucial as she made it to the WTCH24 after the suspension of Gabriella Kota. One of their main competitors is Maria Chedid (LBN)/Amelie Julian (FRA) while the young Hungarian prodigy, Zsofia Dezsenyi with Agnieszka Rybicka (POL) can also cause surprises. The nine doubles are divided into two groups and the first two advance to the semifinals.

18 pairs will compete for the medals in men's doubles. The number one seeded double is Marek Pokwap (POL)/Szaboly Ilyes (ROU), however, Hugo Rabeux (FRA)/Nikola Mitro (SRB) seem to be the favourites too. Another Polish titan Bartlomiej Franczuk with his usual partner, Julien Grondin (FRA) will once again try to finish on the top for the first time in 2024. Martin Csereklye/Benjamin Patrik Toth can be also dangerous to anyone, while the Kratochvil brothers, Petr & David from Czechia are always consistent. Many new faces will debut in Badalona as part of the grassroots development.

The biggest field is in mixed doubles with 22 pairs. The multiple Teqball Tour winner French duo, Julian/Rabeux are seeking their first victory this season. Vicsek with Pokwap won in Santarém and finished second in Malaga while Pechy teamed up with Csereklye as a very interesting twosome. Chedid/Mitro went home with bronze medals from Portugal at the CTL opener, thus they should be also considered favourites while 'Chivi' and Grondin can be unpleasant opponents. The teams are divided into six groups where the first two qualify to the quarterfinals. Just like in MD, many newcomers will debut for the first time at an international Teqball competition which shows great opportunities in Catalonia.

"The Challenger Teqball League debuted in Santarém perfectly and continued its way to Málaga, Szombathely, Odorheiu Secuiesc and finally to Badalona. The players love the events and many new athletes join the Teqball family. It is a strategic initiative by FITEQ to provide Tier IV., V. and VI. tournaments, specifically designed for grassroots players and national federations to gain experience in hosting events" said Bela Muller, Head of Communications at FITEQ. He added, that the organizers of the upcoming tour promise new highs for CTL to put the bar so high that for 2025 they will be able to host a Tier II. or III. event.

The first day of the Challenger Teqball League - Badalona Cup starts with the qualifiers of WD while D1 continues with the matchups of MD until the names of the semifinalists are revealed. Saturday is for mixed doubles and on Sunday all the SFs and finals will be played. The finals will be streamed on TeqTV.
