Pioneering Teqball development in Eswatini and beyond
Mfanafuthi Bhembe, affectionately known as "Taribo," is the president of the Teqball Eswatini Federation and a driving force behind the sport’s growth in Africa. With a passion for sports and a vision for development, Bhembe has worked tirelessly to establish Teqball as a prominent sport in Eswatini while extending its reach to other African nations.
Bhembe’s introduction to Teqball dates back to 2019, facilitated by Mr. Sydney Simelane, CEO of the Eswatini Olympics Association. After attending an International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting in Doha, Simelane learned about Teqball from FITEQ (the International Federation of Teqball) representatives, who shared their vision of making the sport globally recognized. Inspired by this initiative, Simelane invited Bhembe, a dedicated sports enthusiast, to lead the development of Teqball in Eswatini.
In December 2019, Bhembe officially established the Teqball Federation of Eswatini during an inaugural meeting with 15 close collaborators. This milestone marked the beginning of Teqball’s rapid growth in Eswatini, making the nation a regional leader in the sport. Eswatini’s progress under Bhembe’s leadership became a model for other African countries. Without hesitation, Bhembe embraced the challenge. In 2020, he attended a Teqball workshop for Olympafrica directors in Zambia, organized by FITEQ. With guidance from FITEQ, Bhembe acquired the skills and knowledge needed to promote and grow the sport in his homeland.
The founder and president of the domestic federation, has been a tireless promoter and educator of Teqball in his native country and all over in Africa. Taribo has devised and delivered coaching, refereeing and educational courses in over 20 countries and motivated athletes, coaches and referees on the entire continent including women referees who also work internationally.
Recognizing Bhembe’s dedication and expertise, FITEQ entrusted him with the responsibility of introducing and developing Teqball in other African nations. His efforts have reached Togo, Tanzania, Mozambique, South Africa, Lesotho, and Rwanda.
One of Bhembe’s recent standout achievements was his mission to Rwanda. Over three intensive days, he trained 25 participants and eight under-17 athletes from various districts. His comprehensive sessions covered:
- Basic Teqball Rules and Regulations
- Teqball Coaching Techniques
- Refereeing Fundamentals
- Online Athlete and Coach Registration
- Accessing Online Teqball Courses
- Strategic, Operational, and Activity Planning for Teqball Federations
- Youth Training and Table Techniques
By combining theory with practical sessions, Bhembe ignited enthusiasm among the Rwandan participants, who showed immense potential and commitment to expanding Teqball in their communities.
Under his leadership, Eswatini has become a beacon for Teqball’s development, exemplifying the sport’s ability to unite communities and nurture young talent. As president of the Teqball Eswatini Federation, Mfanafuthi "Taribo" Bhembe remains dedicated to advancing the sport locally and across the continent. His efforts are rooted in a deep belief in the transformative power of sports, particularly for youth development. With FITEQ’s continued support and growing network of collaborators, Bhembe envisions a future where Teqball becomes a staple sport across Africa, inspiring generations of athletes.
Through his leadership, Mfanafuthi "Taribo" Bhembe has laid the foundation for Teqball’s growth in Eswatini and beyond, proving that passion and vision can create a lasting impact. His journey serves as a testament to the role of sports in fostering community, talent, and opportunity.
