CTL - Badalona Cup: Pokwap & Vicsek dominated once again
The season of FITEQ's newly debuted competition, Challenger Teqball League has come to an end in Badalona as the last international competition before the World Teqball Championships 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam between December 4 & 8.
Badalona set a new record event before the event started with 58 players (second highest) from 19 countries (highest-ever) in three categories: men's, women's and mixed doubles.
The ultimate showdown before the WTCH24 in women's doubles was great for Petra Pechy and her compatriot, Nora Vicsek as the former made the Hungarian roster of the world champs. The world silver medallists finished the group stage confidently just like all the favourites. In the semi-final, they faced the local hero Silvia Ferrer Garcia and her partner, Timea Kapusi (HUN) and won by 2:0, thus 'Chivi' and Timea finished with bronze medals.. On the other side of the branch, Maria Chedid (LBN)/Amelie Julian (FRA) also triumphed in two against Agnieszka Rybicka (POL)/Zsofia Dezsenyi (HUN). The gold game was one-sided and while Vicsek won her first gold in Badalona, Pechy seems ready for the final showdown in HCMC.
Many new faces debuted in the men's doubles category of the Challenger Teqball League - Badalona Cup. Although Marek Pokwap (POL)/Szabolcs Ilyes (ROU) only lost 11 points on the road to the final, the last game was a bit different. Their opponents Nikola Mitro (SRB)/Hugo Rabeux (FRA) also experienced no upsets. Sunday's penultimate match started with the dominance of the Serbian-French duo. The second set could have been any closer and Pokwap/Ilyes got the victory with a point difference. Although Mitro/Rabeux did everything they could, Pokwap's all-around game was just too much with Ilyes' experience combined.
With 22 doubles the biggest field was in mixed doubles. The fans experienced multiple three sets, the closest one came in the semifinal between Chedid/Mitro and Pechy/Martin Csereklye (HUN) when the latter took the victory in the third period by 17-15. Pokwap/Vicsek against Julian/Rabeux also went to overtime in the SF however the Polish/Hungarian duo left no questions unanswered in the closing set, 12:5. In the final, although there were only two sets those were very tense. The sides were head-to-head but the winners of Santarém used their experience to secure another trophy.
"The Challenger Teqball League was created to provide Tier IV., V. and VI. tournaments, specifically designed for grassroots players and national federations to gain experience in hosting events" said Bela Muller, Head of Communications at FITEQ. He added, that the five hosts, Santarém, Malaga, Szombathely, Odorheiu Secuiesc and Badalona were all loved by the players and coaches and the organizers did an outstanding job. "We have done the first step with CTL but we will not stop as the Tier IV. the tournament continues in 2025 with ten cities."
