WTCH24 - A rematch and a potential underdog story are ahead of us in the singles finals
What is better than a rematch, where one can avenge a previous disappointment, and the other has the chance to prove that that success was not a coincidence? An unexpected champion, maybe? We could have both in the singles finals at the World Teqball Championships 2024.
In the women’s singles finals, defending champion Rafaella Fontes Gimenez from Brazil will face 2023 runner-up Jutatip Kuntatong from Thailand. Their previous meeting occurred in the gold medal match in Bangkok, and that game put the whole World on notice after one of their spectacular rallies went viral, even Ronaldinho gave a standing ovation in the stands. Fontes ended up winning the gold in two close sets, but their first meeting (in the WTCT22 quarterfinals) was even closer as Fontes won the third set in overtime (13:11). It is safe to say that we will not get bored during their third date.
In the men’s singles, Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU) advanced to his third consecutive final after eliminating Boonkoom Tipwong (THA). He won in 2022 against Adrian Duszak (POL), but he lost to him a year later. We were not far away from the trilogy, but Nikola Mitro (SRB), who already achieved a career-best result by making it to the top 4, said “Not on my watch!”. He ousted the defending champion in an amazing three-setter, winning the tie-breaker by two points and kept his dream alive. Still, Gyorgydeak, who is still unbeaten in 2024, is going to be an even harder task for him. Their only previous matchup dates back to 2021, when at the Sumeg Challenger Cup Gyorgydeak came out on top in straight sets.
This is going to be epic, so do not miss it. Join us on TEQ TV on YouTube from 7:30PM local time!
