Pecs becomes the capital of Teqball this weekend
The new era of Teqball begins in Pecs as the Hungarian city hosts two tournaments at the same weekend after the introduction of FITEQ's current competition structure.
The Challenger Teqball League - last year's new FITEQ tournament - returns in 2025 with eleven events. The first, Challenger Teqball League - Pecs PSN, kicks off on February 14 with 60 athletes representing 15 countries in three categories: men's and women's singles and mixed doubles for a 3000€ prize pool and a Tier VI. event, Teqball Cup - Pecs PSN will also be held for lower-ranked athletes (16) to compete at the same weekend with two categories: men's singles and men's doubles to gain World Ranking points and experience. These will also be the first events where athletes play under the new rules.
In Pecs the most stacked with multiple world champions and world medallists is men's singles. Current title-holder, Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU) is the top-ranked athlete, but to continue his insane series of staying unbeaten (56 matches as of today) will not be easy-peasy as the record champion, Adam Blazsovics (HUN), the Polish prodigy Marek Pokwap, the three-time world champion in MD, Nikola Mitro who recently got his first medal in this category at the world champs in Ho Chi Minh City and became only the second in the history of Teqball to gather medals at the biggest stage in three categories are ready. Since then - as the Serbian played on Saturday in MS - the 'King of Teqball' in 2023, Adrian Duszak joined the list as the third (the first one was Gyorgydeak) after the silver medal in men's doubles. Duszak is also among the competitors just like Balazs Katz (HUN) who got his first title in MS last year and is already a proven athlete as a world and European champion in doubles. Young stars like Boldizsar Levik (HUN), Alexander Hamm (AUT) and Saxe Paarup-Clausen (DEN) also have the opportunity to gather FITEQ World Ranking points and surprise their opponents. The 24 athletes will start on Friday and the day finishes with the semifinals.
In women's singles, the 16 athletes are divided into four groups. World bronze medallist and European champion, Kinga Barabasi (ROU) leads the group by the rankings. 'Queen of Teqball' in 2021, Anna Izsak (HUN), European silver medallist, Amelie Julian (FRA), Moldova's first Teqball medallist at international events, Viorica Tonu are all among the competitors. Two Hungarian doubles specialists, Krisztina Acs & Nora Vicsek may cause upsets, yet the biggest attention will follow the return of the two-time world champion, Zsanett Janicsek (HUN) who only attended one international event since the World Teqball Championships 2023 in Bangkok. The battles of WS start on Saturday until the finalists are revealed.
Four pairs in mixed doubles are likely to win the gold medals showing that the best registered to Challenger Teqball League - Pecs PSN. World bronze medallists (2023) Csaba Banyik/Krisztina Acs (HUN), another duo with bronze medals from WTCHs (2024) Barabasi/Gyorgydeak, Teqball World Series and Teqball Challenger League medallist, Adam Blazsovics/Petra Pechy (HUN) and last year's greatest twosome at CTL events, Vicsek/Pokwap are all the teams to beat. One of Janicsek's world championship titles is from XD (2021), this time she will go for the best results along with the experienced compatriot Martin Csereklye. Mitro teamed up once again with the Lebanese Maria Chedid and this cooperation already meant a bronze in Badalona. It will be interesting to see what will achieve the double of Mira Faeno Dahlmann (DEN)/Balazs Katz as well as Viorica Tonu/Arnold Szilagyi (ROU) as newly formed pairs. The last gameday starts with the matches of mixed doubles at 9 AM.
With 17 players, the Tier VI., Teqball Cup Pecs PSN kicks off on Friday with men's singles while in doubles the tournament continues on Saturday.
Both competition's finals will be streamed on TEQ TV. The program starts with Teqball Cup Pecs PSN's golden game of men's singles from 2:30 PM (CET), then followed by men's doubles. CTL's last matchups are from 3:30 PM in the order of MS, WS & XD.
