The brilliance lies in the details - Jutatip Kuntatong was the best at WTCH24
The World Teqball Championships 2024 once again showcased the sport at its highest level, bringing together top athletes from 56 nations. With a total of 221 (135 male – 86 female) competitors, the tournament provided a platform for thrilling encounters, strategic mastery, and unforgettable moments. Hosted in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the event captivated audiences with its intense matchups and unexpected outcomes, reaffirming Teqball’s growing global presence. As the conclusion of the tournament, we will look at the numbers and determine who were the absolute champions, from different aspects.
First, it is important to note that in the following statistical numbers, we do not differentiate between singles and doubles matchups, therefore not limiting players to a single category.
The highest-scoring player was Adrian Duszak (POL), having been part of 241 total points during his 9 games. The 2nd and close 3rd were Jutatip Kuntatong (THA) and Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU) with 226 and 223 points respectively. Although, the total tally of Kuntatong (gaining her first WTCH title in singles and defending it in women's doubles) fell short of first place, her incredible 130-point difference was a spectacle to behold. Apor Gyorgydeak shined in this category too, boasting an impressive 118-point differential during his campaign. The 3rd place goes to now 4-time world champion Thai, Suphawadi Wongkhamchan, who put up a point differential score of 101.
The WTCH featured fewer games than the year before due to the weather conditions, however, if we account for the difference and calculate the abovementioned players’ numbers based on last year's games played, Adrian Duszak would undoubtedly smash the record of Suphawadi Wongkhamchan’s 336 points, with an enormous feat of 374 points scored of 16 games. In fact, 13 out of the 18 best-performing players at the world champs would beat the Thai’s previously set record. Numbers like this could only be achieved with close games, more 3rd sets, and ultimately, higher levels of play from everyone involved in the sport. This number shows the ever-progressing nature of Teqball.
To determine the most dominant player of the tournament we would have to look at point difference per game, which was ultimately topped by women’s singles and double’s gold medallist, Jutatip Kuntatong, with an outstanding 14,44 score. However, this stellar achievement still does not beat Suphawadi Wongkhamchan’s World Teqball Championships 2023 score of 15.64. The second place is awarded to the men’s singles champion, Apor Gyorgydeak, who bested the field with a 13,11 point differential per game. A joint third place is awarded to the men’s doubles champion Thai duo, consisting of Sorrasak Thaosiri and Jirati Chanliang, with a 12,80 point difference per game.
As we all know, Teqball as a sport is not only for the attacking wizardry but also for rock-solid defensive manoeuvres, which was best showcased by Jutatip Kuntatong, who only allowed 10,67 points per game to her opponents. Apor Gyorgydeak became a close second in this category too, playing relentless defence in both singles and doubles, reaching a score of 11,67 points allowed through 9 matches (which was joint most with Jutatip Kuntatong and Adrian Duszak). The third-best defensive performance was displayed by Csaba Banyik (HUN), who allowed 12,75 points in his men’s doubles campaign with his compatriot Balazs Katz.
The highest scoring games were brought to the Teqball table by Phakpong Dejaroen who won once again in mixed doubles and whose matches had an amazing 28,20 points per game, just edging the Brazillian Rafaella Fontes Gimenez’s runner-up in WS 27,00 score. The games of Adrian Duszak saw no shortage of points either, who achieved third place in this category with 26,78 points per game.
Rafaella Fontes Gimenez, Csaba Banyik, Sorrasak Thaosiri and Jirati Chanliang were masters of the opening stages of the game, and came out on top during all of their 1st sets, while Jutatip Kuntatong, Kinga Barabasi, the bronze medallist in both WS and XD, Apor Gyorgydeak and Adrian Duszak remained unbeaten the 2nd sets of their games.
The most active player of the tournament was Adrian Duszak, having played 21 sets during the World Teqball Championships 2024, just one more set than Suphawadi Wongkhamchan. Jutatip Kuntatong and Apor Gyorgyeak clinched the joint 3rd place with 19 sets played throughout the competition.
The World Teqball Championships 2024 proved to be a spectacular event in the history of the sport, with 150 games played over four days of nonstop action. As the numbers suggest, the best earned their accolades by dominating the table in every aspect of the game. As Teqball continues to evolve, exciting times lie ahead for the athletes and the way we approach the curved table.
