CTL: The 'King of Teqball' was unstoppable in Presov

Marojevic returned with a silver medal while the Hungarians dominated at the Teqball Cup.

FITEQ's newest tournament continued in Presov, Slovakia, where the city simultaneously hosted a Tier VI. event for lower-ranked athletes.

The first render-vous of the Challenger Teqball League of 2025 was in Pecs last month and the athletes were keen to compete again, this time in Presov, Slovakia. CTL - Presov attracted the attention of the favourites, as multiple world and European champions competed for 3000 USD. Altogether, 60 athletes from 13 countries registered for the three categories, women's, men's and mixed doubles while in the Tier VI. event, the opponents faced each other in women's singles and men's doubles.

In women's doubles the most decorated pair, the Hungarian Nora Vicsek/Petra Pechy advanced confidently to the knockout stage letting a whopping 6 points per match to their opponents. Kinga Barabasi/Viorica Tonu had a bumpier route semis but finished first in Group B. Behind the Romanian and Moldovian duo, Maria Chedid from Lebanon and the world bronze and European silver medallist Amelia Julian qualified while the biggest question of this category was who will be the fourth twosomes in the SF. Timea Kapusi (HUN)/Maria Clemente (POR) answered best to the question and faced Barabasi/Tonu in the semifinal. The two, highest-ranked doubles did not let any chances to their opponents, thus Vicsek/Pechy played against Barabasi/Tonu with the motivation of striking back after the loss in 2024's last Teqball World Series in Budapest. Pechy started the final with sharp attacks and great, indefensible smashes while Tonu did not find the rhythm on both sides of the field. After the Hungarians took the first set, the dynamic of the game did not change in the second and triumphed in Presov.

The odds were not that unclear in men's doubles as four couples were considered previously as heavy favourites. After the quiet group stage, the multiple worlds and European bronze medallist, Hugo Rabeux (FRA) and the Portuguese phenomenon, Martim Vasques quickly surprised the two-time world champion in men's singles, Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU) and his clubmate Marek Pokwap (POL) in the first set. Quick rest between the periods and the newly formed superpower first equalized, then had no chance in the third and advanced to the semifinal. The teenagers, Jens Toftegaard from Denmark and Stefan Orlowski (POL) did not give up easily against the record champion, Adam Blazsovics (HUN) and his compatriot Toth Benjamin Patrik and forced them to three sets. This extra time may caused fatigue in SF against the three-time world champion Serbians Bogdan Marojevic/Nikola Mitro who easily closed the game in two and reached the final in Marojevic's return after a five-month hiatus. On the other side of the branch, the category's world champions of 2023, Csaba Banyik/Balazs Katz could not stop the new powerhouse, Gyorgydeak/Pokwap and the team GOBEK reached the gold game. In the final, Marojevic did what he does best, attacking with headers and smashes and it seemed that it would be enough to secure the win, however, Gyorgydeak and Pokwap did not get tired after hundreds of meters running of defending the Serbian's attacks and remained cool to finish them off in the third set.

The GOBEK, Gyorgydeak/Barabasi once again reached the final in mixed doubles after the successful campaign in Pecs to defend their title. Blazsovics/Pechy and Pokwap/Vicsek finished as bronze medallists as next to the Romanians, the Julian/Katz duo advanced to the last game of Challenger Teqball League - Presov. The French was continuously attacked by both opponents and could not stop them, therefore Gyorgydeak finished with two gold medals while Barabasi gathered one silver and one gold in Presov.

Just like in Pecs, Presov also organised two competitions at the same time. In men's doubles, the Hungarians, Soma Mudriz/Zalan Erdei although finished only second in the group, found new energies and won the Teqball Cup - Presov against the Polish duo Konrad Tarkowsi/Piotr Pinkiewicz while the bronze medal was won by Zoltan Pal/Kristof Murva (HUN) who were considered as favourites before the competition started but lost in the semifinal against their compatriots. In women's singles, Kapusi with a calm game plan got the victory against Adriana Kecerova (SVK) and won her first international Teqball title, while the bronze medal was taken by Tunde Miklos (ROU).

The third Challenger Teqball League event of 2025 will be held in Wavre, Belgium, between April 04th and 6th. The finals will be streamed on TEQ TV.
