CTL: „GOBEK” swept the competition in Wavre

FITEQ’s Challenger Teqball League format attracted the largest field in 2025 as the players competed in Wavre, Belgium.

The third edition of the CTL took place in Wavre after two successful events earlier in the year in Pecs and Prešov. The competition featured 87 athletes, including some of the most decorated Teqball players, all competing for a $4,000 prize pool. There was no shortage of excitement thanks to the prestigeous group of players and the largest field of the year so far. Athletes competed in four categories: men’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The winning men’s doubles from the last CTL in Prešov – Apor Gyorgydeak (ROU)/Marek Pokwap (POL) – picked up right where they left off, posting an impressive +36 point differential in their group, allowing just six points per game on average. It came as no surprise that the world’s top-ranked men’s doubles pair – Csaba Banyik (HUN)/Balazs Katz (HUN) – topped their group with a commanding 48:16 point differential. The experienced duo of Adam Blazsovics (HUN)/Nikola Mitro (SRB) also made waves, posting a +31 point differential in the group stage. In the semi-finals, the Hungarian world number ones faced the dynamic duo of GOBEK, where Gyorgydeak/Pokwap advanced with a convincing 2-0 win. On the other side of the bracket, Lionel Beyer (FRA)/Baptiste Berna (POR) were unable to overcome the superb Blazsovics/Mitro tandem. The men’s doubles final ended in a 2-0 victory for Gyorgydeak/Pokwap, who sent a clear message to the elites of the category. Banyik/Katz claimed bronze with a 2-0 win in the third-place match.

In the women’s doubles group stage, two favourites emerged as the unbeaten duos of Petra Pechy (HUN)/Nora Vicsek (HUN) and Krisztina Acs (HUN)/Kinga Barabasi (ROU) breezed through their matches. The road to the final was relatively straightforward, setting up a clash between the most decorated Hungarian pair and Barabasi, who teamed up with the current world number one in mixed doubles, Acs. The final lived up to expectations, going the full distance in a thrilling three-set battle. Barabasi/Acs emerged victorious, clinching the third set 13-11. Maria Chedid (LBN)/Amélie Julian (FRA) secured bronze with a confident performance.

The men’s singles field was packed with talent and featured plenty of exciting matchups. For the first time in the 2025 CTL campaign, there was no clear favourite, as the 2024 world champion Apor Gyorgydeak only competed in MD and XD. Several players signalled their intent to win the category: Pokwap, Blazsovics, and Martin Csereklye (HUN), who posted the best point differential, as well as the 15-year-old Polish prodigy Stefan Orlowski, who didn’t drop a single set. Saxe Paarup-Clausen (DEN), Balazs Katz, and Lionel Beyer (FRA) also advanced through the group stage without losing a set. All six favourites reached the round of 32, but in the round of 16, Pokwap eliminated his countryman – Stefan Orlowski - and Beyer fell to Gergo Dombai (HUN). Pokwap continued his run by defeating Blazsovics in straight sets, while Katz ended Paarup-Clausen’s campaign. Csereklye made a statement with a dominant 12-3, 12-3 win over Yassine Sahli (TUN), followed by a semi-final victory over Dombai. In the final, Pokwap overcame the formidable challenge of Balázs Katz and edged out Csereklye in a 2-1 thriller to earn his first-ever men’s singles title in CTL format. The bronze medal went to Katz, who won a three-set battle against Dombai.

The Romanian powerhouse of Gyorgydeak/Barabasi dominated the mixed doubles group stage with a +51 point differential across six sets. The world number one duo in XD – Acs/Banyik – surprisingly dropped a set during their group campaign, as opposed to the Chedid/Mitro and Csereklye/Pechy pairings. In the knockout stages, the Hungarian duo proved their pedigree and advanced to the final, where they faced the Romanian pair. The intense finale, ended in a three-set showdown in favour of the GOBEK superteam.

All categories were won by the Odorheiu Secuesc based team, with Marek Pokwap, Kinga Barabasi, and Apor Gyorgydeak each taking home two gold medals.

The fourth Challenger Teqball League event will be held in Grindsted, Denmark, from May 8–10.
