Columbia hosted 2025' first international Teqball event in South America

The Teqball Open -  Popayán, two day event on the 18th & 19th of April with 38 athletes competing across four categories: women’s singles, men’s singles, men’s doubles, and mixed doubles. As the sport continues to expand, events like this serve as essential platforms – offering athletes a chance to compete at a high level and earn FITEQ world ranking points.

Teqball Opens act as a crucial part of the sport’s structure and global development. They help build a broader competitive pathway, introduce Teqball to new communities, and provide valuable match experience for players pushing to reach the next level. In doing so, they support the sport’s continued globalisation – ensuring that Teqball remains open, accessible, and visible in every corner of the world.

With four titles contested over two days, the finals delivered a mix of composure, emerging talent, and moments of clarity under pressure.

In the women’s singles group stage, Laura Catalina Gomez Bulla (COL) delivered a standout performance, topping the table with a +38 point difference. She went on to secure the title, defeating Dainny Sofia Mahecha Orozco (COL) in straight sets: 12–6, 12–5. For Gomez Bulla, it was a well-earned victory that reflects the depth of talent emerging in the women’s game, particularly in regions where Teqball is still gaining traction.

The men’s singles group stage featured 21 participants competing to reach the knockouts. Joshua Bello (COL), Jose Pablo Gonzalez Hidalgo (GUA), and Jose Ricardo Oviedo Amortegui (COL) emerged as frontrunners, each delivering strong performances. Bello and Gonzalez Hidalgo progressed through the group stage without dropping a set, while Oviedo Amortegui advanced from a six-player group with a 10:1 set record, losing only once. In the final, Oviedo Amortegui edged out Bello in a tightly contested three-set match. Gonzalez Hidalgo claimed the bronze after a back-and-forth battle against Santiago Alejandro Corredor Lopez (COL).

The men’s doubles final brought a familiar pairing, as Bello and Oviedo Amortegui joined forces to face Ruben Dario Llanos Moreno (COL) and Dexter Alejandro Gonzalez Suarezin (COL). The match ended 12–5, 12–4 in favour of Bello and Oviedo Amortegui, who demonstrated cohesion from the outset and maintained control with sharp execution and positional discipline.

In mixed doubles, Jose Pablo Gonzalez Hidalgo and Laura Catalina Gomez Bulla impressed throughout the competition. The duo breezed through the group stage without dropping a set and carried that form into the final, where they defeated Karolina Pinto (COL) and Salomon Rodriguez (COL) by a commanding 12–6, 12–3 scoreline.

The Popayán Open also reflected the growing momentum of Teqball across Latin America. A total of 38 athletes took part, not only from across Colombia but also from countries including Mexico, Ecuador, and Guatemala. The level of play was competitive throughout, with every athlete contributing to the event’s energy and purpose. Most importantly, the goal of showcasing Latin American Teqball on home soil was clearly achieved – a reminder that both Colombia and the wider region are becoming true strongholds of the sport.
